Discovering North Macedonia: A Land of Sunshine and Exquisite Wines

Nestled in the heart of the Balkans, North Macedonia is a country blessed with abundant sunshine, fertile soil, and a favourable climate, making it an ideal region for winemaking. Let’s go on a virtual journey to explore the three remarkable wine regions: Povardarje, Pelagonija-Polog, and Pčinja-Osogovo.

1. Povardarje: The Heart of Wine Production

Covering a significant portion of the country, the Povardarje region encompasses cities and villages along the Vardar River. It is the powerhouse of wine production, contributing an impressive 83% of North Macedonia’s total wine output. The majority of wines produced here are red, renowned for their exceptional quality and taste.

Tikvesh Vineyard: Tikvesh is an integral part of the Povardarje wine region, located in the central part of the country, and is famous for its artificial lake and the cities of Kavadarci and Negotino. Tikvesh is the centre of wine production, with a history spanning over 120 years. Vineyard of Ovče Pole: Another gem in the central wine region of North Macedonia’s Vardar Valley, Ovče Pole contributes significantly to the country’s wine production. The vineyard features red wine varieties like Vranec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Stanusina, Pinot Noir, and Kadarka, alongside white wines such as Chardonnay, Belan, Muscat, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Smederevka, Muscat Ottonel, Temjanka, and Žilavka.
Vineyard of Skopje: Also located in the central wine region of North Macedonia’s Vardar Valley. Some of the popular red wine varieties include Vranec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Stanušina, Pinot Noir, and Kadarka, while white wine enthusiasts can indulge in Chardonnay, Belan, Muscat, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Smederavka, Muscat Ottonel, Temjanka, and Žilavka.

2. Pelagonija-Polog: The Undiscovered Gem

While accounting for a smaller share of wine production (10–15%), the Pelagonija-Polog region is a hidden gem in the country’s wine scene. Situated in the Pelagonija and Polog valleys, this region produces wines at higher altitudes, resulting in unique and captivating flavours.

Vineyard of Bitola: Located in North Macedonia’s Pelagonisko-Poloski wine region, Bitola Vineyard offers a delightful array of wine varieties. Red wine enthusiasts can savour Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Prokupec Vrenec, while white wine lovers can enjoy Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Žilavka Smederavka.
Vineyard of Kičevo: Another gem in the Pelagonisko-Poloski wine region, Kičevo vineyard presents wine lovers with an assortment of red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Prokupec, and Vranec, as well as white wines including Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Žilavka, and Smederevka.
Vineyard of Ohrid: In the Pelagonisko-Poloski wine region, Ohrid vineyard offers a delightful range of red wine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Prokupec, and Vranec, as well as white wines like Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Žilavka, and Smederevka.

Vineyard of Prilep: Situated in North Macedonia’s Pelagonisko-Poloski wine region, Prilep vineyard boasts a variety of red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Prokupec, and Vranec, alongside white wines like Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Žilavka, and Smederevka.
Vineyard of Tetovo: Last but not least, the Tetovo vineyard in the Pelagonisko-Poloski wine region offers wine enthusiasts a delightful range of red wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Prokupec, and Vranec, as well as white wines like Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Žilavka, and Smederevka.

3. Pčinja-Osogovo: Contemporary Wineries in the East

Embracing the eastern part of the country, Pčinja-Osogovo is the smallest wine region, contributing less than 5% to the country’s wine production. Nonetheless, it is home to some of the most modern wineries.

Vineyard of Pijanechco: Pijanechco Vineyard welcomes wine enthusiasts with a selection of red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay Noir, Gamay Tenturier, Pinot Noir, and Vranec, alongside white wines like Muscat Ottonel, Riesling, Sipon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Žilavka.
